The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretariat will host a workshop for members of the ISA Legal and Technical Commission to review research carried out by the Legal Working Group on Liability for Environmental Harm from Activities in the Area. The workshop will have three panels, chaired respectively by Alfonso Ascencio-Herrera Legal Counsel and Deputy to the Secretary-General ISA, Neil Craik CIGI Senior Fellow, and Silvia Maciunas Deputy Director of Environmental Law CIGI, along with participation by select members of the working group. Topics which will be discussed with the LTC will look at legal liability for activities in the area generally, and issues relating to defining compensable environmental damage, attribution of liability, potential claimants and fora, and effective control.
